What is the new PUMA ULTRAWEAVE + ThermoAdapt?

PUMA ULTRAWEAVE ThermoAdapt

If you follow kit news, you know that PUMA changed the game a few years ago with their super-light “Authentic” kits. But for the 2026 World Cup cycle, they have upgraded the technology.

Here is the story of how the PUMA kit evolved and what has actually changed.

What is ULTRAWEAVE? (Launched 2021)

PUMA first launched ULTRAWEAVE in October 2021. It made its debut on the pitch with the Italian National Team (Puma.com)

The goal was simple: make the lightest football kit ever.

The Weight: It weighed only 72 grams.

The Build: Instead of using 4 to 8 pieces of fabric, PUMA used only two main panels. This removed extra seams and made the kit feel like paper.

The Look: The old ULTRAWEAVE was very smooth and flat. If you looked closely, it had a “ripstop” pattern (tiny squares) to keep it from tearing.

The New Era: ULTRAWEAVE + ThermoAdapt

For the 2026 World Cup kits (and 25/26 club season), PUMA realized that being “light” wasn’t enough. Players needed to stay cool. They added ThermoAdapt to the mix.

What are the main differences?

1. From “Smooth” to “3D Texture”

Old: Perfectly flat and smooth. It could sometimes feel a bit like wearing a thin plastic sheet.

New: Uses a “Dobby” weave. This creates a 3D texture on the fabric. It looks like tiny bumps or ridges. This texture keeps the kit from sticking to the player’s skin when they sweat.

2. Active Cooling (The “Thermo” Part)

Old: The cooling was “passive”—just basic holes or thin fabric.

New: ThermoAdapt is “active.” The fibers are designed to react to your body temperature. When you get hot, the fabric structure changes slightly to let more air pass through

3. Better Movement

Old: Had “4-way stretch,” but it could feel a bit stiff because it was so thin.

New: The 3D Dobby weave allows the kit to stretch more naturally. It feels more like a high-end sports fabric and less like “paper.”

4. Sustainable Material (RE:FIBRE)

Old: Made from standard recycled polyester (mostly plastic bottles).

New: Made using RE:FIBRE. This is a newer process where PUMA recycles old clothes and textile waste to create the new kits.

Why the upgrade matters?

When looking at 2026 kits for teams like Portugal, Manchester City, or Morocco, the fabric is the biggest giveaway.

The “Old” Ultraweave was a great start, but the “New” version with ThermoAdapt is designed for the heat of the 2026 World Cup in North America. It’s not just about being light anymore it’s about staying cool under pressure.
